Prenatal appointments are performed at our Marsing office and typically include:
a routine physical exam, listening to baby/fetal heart tones, checking blood pressure and maternal vital signs, measuring fundal height, and abdominal palpation to determine the baby’s position. This exam typically takes about 15 minutes, which leaves plenty of time to address your individual needs, answer questions, and discuss routine prenatal topics during your 1-hour appointment. This allows us to connect more deeply as we prepare emotionally and mentally for your baby's Birth-day!
Lab draws are performed during your regular prenatal appointments or referred to be done at your lab of choice. Ultrasounds and lab work are not a service covered in our fees, but can be drawn in-office and ordered for you.
Prenatal appointments typically follow this schedule:
Monthly until 28 weeks
Bi-weekly from 28-36 weeks
A Home visit around 35 weeks
Weekly from 36-41 weeks
Desert Roots Midwifery believes in the sacredness of birth. We will enter your home quietly and calmly as we are invited into your labor space. Your midwifery team is there to support you with 24 hour on-call service. In the very early stages of labor, we will often communicate over the phone. As your body changes and active labor is established, we will come to your home.
We will perform a full clinical assessment upon arriving at your home, and discretely throughout labor and birth, as we monitor the well-being of both mother and baby. We believe in immediate skin-to-skin contact, continuous between mother and newborn to promote bonding and lactation. After honoring the Golden Hour, we will perform a comprehensive newborn exam, continued breastfeeding support, perineal evaluation and repair if needed. Our family centered care means that we love to involve siblings and partners while we count newborn fingers and toes, cut the umbilical cord, and measure your baby during their exam.
We strive to leave your home approximately 2-hours after the birth of your baby, with your family snuggled in bed and your birth space tidy.
After the long-awaited arrival of your newborn, we will continue to provide support as you navigate this new season of life. We will continue to provide breastfeeding counseling, newborn physical exams, and maternal physiological and emotional assessments.
As you recover, we will continue to come to your home for regular visits within the first 24 hours and 5 days postpartum. Continued visits will be performed at our office around 2 weeks, 4 weeks, and 6 weeks postpartum.
